It's an exciting time for Iowa County's high school sports teams.
For the first time in 14 years, Dodgeville wrestling crowned two state champions at the WIAA Individual State Wrestling Tournament in the Kohl Center.
Congratulations to Charlie Meudt on taking the 106 lb. title and Reid Spurley on taking the 113 lb. title in Division 2.
Our area was represented well Saturday, as Mineral Point had five podium finishers, and Iowa-Grant/Highland had two.
Roen Carey (106), Lucas Sullivan (126) and Tarrin Riley (138) finished runner-up in the finals.
Mineral Point seniors Bo Hanson and Trapper Nafzger placed sixth and fourth.
Elliott Biba, an Iowa-Grant/Highland sophomore, took home silver in the Division 3, 106 lb. championship.
Senior Mason Welsh battled back to finish fifth.
Congratulations to the other state qualifiers: Jackson Kemnitzer (Iowa-Grant); Kade Rule (Mineral Point); Carson Kroll (Mineral Point).
In girls basketball, the Argyle Orioles made history by winning their first ever regional title with a resounding 61-30 defeat of Catholic Central.
Mineral Point claimed their fourth straight regional title with a 57-46 victory over Lancaster.
The Highland Cardinals held off Kickapoo 45-34 to take regionals.
#2 Highland will play #1 Belmont at Richland Center Thursday in sectional semifinals.
The #1 Pointers will have their hands full with a strong Aquinas team Thursday; a location hasn't been announced yet.
Argyle will face #1 Albany at Sun Prairie Thursday.
The boys teams start tournament play this week.
Mineral Point (Division 4) and Dodgeville (Division 3) have first round bye's as they're #1 seeds.
The Pointers host Fennimore or Cochrane-Fountain City Friday at 7:00 p.m.
The Dodgers will host Richland Center or River Valley.
Also, congratulations to the Dodgeville/Mineral Point/Iowa-Grant gymnastics team who is state bound with their second place finish at sectionals Saturday.
