Along The Ad Routes

You can't take the farmer out of the farmer! Last Friday I was at the "Class Luncheon" that anyone who graduated from or is/was connected the Dodgeville High School attends the first Friday of the month at the Red Room. I sat next to graduate Tom Wilson, who is a lot younger than me and I told him I didn't like him, but I'd sit next to him anyway! We go way back. I ordered fish and he ordered the soup and salad bar. He got himself a big salad that looked really good. Then he got himself some soup. What did he do? Being the old farmer he is, he didn't want to waste another bowl, so he put the soup on the plate he had his salad on! When he came back to the table several of us had to chuckle seeing the soup and oyster crackers on the plate and not in a bowl!

Saturday morning breakfast took Bob, Terry, Dave and I to Highland at "Front Porch Cafe". The former Grandma's Kitchen and then Betsy's Cafe had been closed for awhile until new ownership came in. We had been there a while back just after they opened. We needed to go not too far away since we had to be at DodgeFest back in Dodgeville around 10:00 a.m. Last time we were there we had two Jenna's wait on us, this time it was only one - Jenna James, a recent Highland graduate. I had a huge "build your own" omelette. I got it all down though!

We made it back to DodgeFest in time to open the Lions Club's Deep Fried Cheese Curd Stand. Boy, it was hot again pretty much all day long. We sold quite a few curds and were in operation until near the end of the evening. I had to move from that spot to sell beverage tickets around 7:30 until the night ended. My voice pretty much left me by evening's end, due to being overly tired. I was still hoarse on Sunday! By the time Madison County came on as the final band of the night the parking lot behind the courthouse was pretty full. It was a good time!

The fun thing about that event is all the people I get to see probably only at DodgeFest each year. There were several DHS class reunions who met there plus a lot of families there during the day. Some people just stumble upon it while they are passing through. Some people return to Dodgeville just to help out at the event!

The Knights' Home Talent baseball game was cancelled last Sunday due to weather conditions. It is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. this Sunday at Centennial Park. We play an old nemesis in Verona, a team that has dominated the Western Section over the years. It should be a good day to come out and support the team that is in playoff action. Two wins gets them to the "Final Four" which is like the World Series of Home Talent play!

This coming weekend is the Annual Cobb Corn Roast, Cobb's big celebration of the summer. That is also like a reunion time for a lot of area people. Join in on the fun and take in some of the events that are going on from kids' ball games that began on Tuesday to live music on Friday and Saturday, a car show, FREE sweet corn on Sunday with a parade on Sunday too.

Here's a little bizarre fact. Today (Thursday, August 11) ends "Dog Days of Summer". What does tha mean? I don't really know for sure, but it is supposed to end the hottest days of summer. I really don't think that holds true, but it's a good thought!
